Portraits with your plants

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to make a portrait?

Large format photography is a slow and time-intensive process. A portrait session for one photograph typically takes up to one hour. A lot depends on the size of your location, how many plants you’d like included in the portrait, how many people and/or pets, how calm those people/pets are… etc. Once we decide on where the photograph will be made, it takes about 10-15 minutes to set up the camera and another 5-10 minutes to focus and make a picture.

If you requested more than one portrait/outfit or location change, the time can vary up to 2 hours.

What does a portrait session include?

A session includes two portraits made from black and white 4x5 sheet film, a wallet-sized instant print, and hi-res digital scan(s) of each 4x5 portrait.

If you purchase additional 4x5 portraits, each includes a hi-res digital scan. Prints can be purchased separately for an additional fee.

Once the session has ended, I will send you the digital copy via wetransfer. Please allow up to three months to receive your digital image.

*Please note, your portrait session includes two photographs of the same portrait pose. Our eyes tend to blink when the flash goes off and I want to ensure we create an image with your eyes open (unless of course you want your eyes closed in the final photograph).

How much does it cost?

Portrait session - $175

Additional 4x5 portraits - $30 each

Additional instant prints - $5 each

Travel outside of 30 miles but within 50 miles - $100

Printed photographs (Hahnemuhle FineArt Baryta) - please contact for sizes and pricing

What’s your travel range?

I live just outside of San Marcos, TX. The $175 portrait rate will cover those that are located within a 30 mile radius. If you are located outside of a 50 mile radius, please reach out to discuss travel rates.

What if I’m not happy with how the final image turned out?

It varies. If you don’t like the way your hair/face, etc. turned out, we can schedule a reshoot for a $100 fee to cover travel and material costs. If there is a chemistry issue that affects the final quality of the photograph, we can schedule a follow up session and discuss cost.

Please keep in mind that I am making photographs using a historical process. With it may come opportunity for soft focusing, minor flaws, etc. It’s what makes large format such a beautiful medium.

Booking, Rescheduling, and Cancellations

A non-refundable deposit of $50 is required to secure a portrait session and date. The remaining full payment for service is due no later than 48 hours prior to your scheduled portrait session. If you fail to make the final payment by the deadline, your deposit is forfeited and your booking will be cancelled.

All appointments are on Saturdays or Sundays. There are no exceptions at this time.

I understand that things happen and you may need to reschedule. A 24 hour notice is required to reschedule. If you already paid in full, the amount you paid will be credited towards your next appointment. All reschedules will be charged a 25% convenience fee. I put a lot of time and effort into preparing for our portrait session. If something comes up, please don’t be afraid to let me know.

Cancellations require a 48-hour notice. If you cancel between 48 and 24 hours after making payment in full and are unable to reschedule, you will receive a 50% refund minus the nonrefundable deposit. No refunds are provided for cancellations made within 24 hours.

Can you take my portrait in color?

I am not offering color portraits at this time. Black and white film photography is timeless and the grain of Ilford FP4 film is unmatched. Color film is also expensive to process and can take longer to get back from the lab.

what to expect

Large format photography is different from modern digital SLR or 35mm processes. This process has the ability to capture every minute detail. The photographs can be printed the size of a billboard and maintain quality.

It can be intimidating to sit in front of a large camera and bright lights, especially if you plan to invite children to the session. There can be a lot of anticipation around viewing the finalized photograph and it may not be what you expect.

You may not receive a highly edited/manipulated and/or perfect photograph. If this is what you are expecting, this process may not be for you. It is possible for your portraits to be taken, and we later find out that your eyes were closed. Your portrait session includes two sheets of film to make a photograph around one pose. This is to avoid imperfections and ensure we make a beautiful portrait.

For a majority of our portrait session, we will build conversation and get to know each other. A lot of this helps with calming the nerves and creating an inviting environment. Your portrait session not only produces a beautiful portrait, but also a truly unique experience.
